pDOSing OccupyWallStreet

What IS our ONE demand?

More network analysis tonight, starting off with this post from Joshua Kopstein with a view that shares a concern of this blog:

... and this one from Patrick Meier:

And that's the topic for tonight. [tweets in italics per usual]

Definition: pDOS - Political Distribution of Services - a social network brute-force attack based on buffer overflow; used to overwhelm a political network in order to override the operating system [message]. - The Political Hacker's Handbook

we are simply watching. #OWS stay on Target, stay on Target...

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

We've seen the professional astroturfers and sockpuppets ramp up over the last 8 days in the Twitter, FB and Google+ services; the assault troops [trolls] with their bag of tricks, port-scanning for vulnerabilities and exploits in the system resources [people]. They've followed the standard curve from semi-benign to all-out attacks on both the sentiments and statements of supporters, many becoming downright threatening and vicious. This is fine; this is what network security is all about and is prepares for; system disrupters and crackers. But there's another attack vector to worry about: hacking from within.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

OccupyWallStreet has its own operating system; it's nodes and ports, servers and terminals. It has it's BIOS [get the money out of politics] and software [Glass-Steagall Act; Revoke corporate "personhood"; Campaign donations limit, etc]. These are the protocols of the OWS position; they have been stated openly on the OccupyWallStreet.Org site and are being continually updated [hotfix].

This is the message that galvanised the movement. This is the chosen broadcast signal:

"Wall Street" is the symbol for the corporate money interests, who have brought the country to dire financial condition several times; who claim record profits while outsourcing the jobs they used as bait for a federal bailout to save money on cheap (exploitive) labor; who play gambling games with other people's money and then lay the costs back on the public, whose money they gambled with in the first place, claiming they are 'too big to fail."

A secondary signal runs in parallel with this carrier wave: money is being used to corrupt politics and the people's will for the profit of corporations who pervert the clear intention of law with legal sophistries, damaging and destroying the foundations of justice, creative progress, financial health and infrastructure in America.

Comparing closed and open source models

OWS

It's a pretty straightforward and clear signal. It shares some basic information and parameters of the original Tea Party manifestos [I hear you yelling at me now; just hang in; this is a religious debate on par with Mac vs MS]. It recognizes that the financial sector has been mismanaged to a frightful degree several times in recent memory and the cost of this irresponsible financial conduct has descended on the middle class, devastating much of the population of "ordinary America."

Where it splits and configures its own network is at the Government junction. OccupyWallStreet has identified a crucial network problem: there's a pwned subnet in the system. The political and legal system servers have been financially hacked. That's where the root of many system instabilities lie.

TP-OS

The Tea Party's platform is basically the same-old-same-old "Git Gummint Outta Mah Face." This political nag, nebulous and insubstantial, has proven adaptable by Right, Left, Center, Extreme and Fringe for several thousand years. It is a chameleon; a shapeshifter; easily-suborned and reprogrammed by lobbyists; a polymorphous virus - "Te Leaderz sux" - that offers no new model for an cyclical and self-reinforcing infinite loop.

I am a Republican. The #occupywallstreet people are correct if they want the government to get its stinking fingers out of the economy.

But all of us know - we who live in the world and not in imagination or fantasy - that money buys law and lobbyists in this country; power is green, not Red or Blue (I think any intelligent adult would grant that common observation). Lobbyists twist the democratic republic's operating system; even the Tea Party declares it but aims at that old sawhorse "Government" in the same way it has done forever... and ends up back in the old money-bag. And that's what OccupyWallStreet is about and why the Tea Party instantly went into attack/suborn mode despite a common ground with many of their stated grievances.

[you'd expect that, of course. The Tea Party runs on a completely-different operating system, uses completely-different protocols and is a broadcast system, drawing its power from nodes and overriding their individuality. It is a closed-source system]

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

TP-OS is the antithesis of the OWS model of self-configuring neural network. OWS is learning by making connections, establishing a common language and exchanging and comparing data and information in the same way tribal councils, flash-mobs and internet memes work: by group participation and discussion [handshaking; SYN and ACK]. This is a network model based on horizontal hierarchy instead of vertical hierarchy [hegemony]. The network is learning from itself even as it configures itself in a cybernetic feedback loop, sharing analogs and metaphors with biological as well as digital models.

OWS is open-source. And with that comes one danger that has sidelined and weakened other open-source projects: fracturing of focus.

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

Broadcast Signal Intrusion (it's a trap!)

Not only the Big Politico networks rumbling into action; I've been watching for the last three days as every splinter group and cause has flooded the channels with their grievances... with OccupyWallStreet. "You aren't representing Latinos/Native Americans/the Homeless/Black people/Blind people/Pets/Rape victims/moderates/extremists/pot smokers/gays/women/the Old/Vegetarians/Allergenic people... "

Funny how the conditions blacks have been living under are suddenly unacceptable now that whites are also experiencing it

A dense multiplicity of signal, all clamoring for a chunk of the OWS bandwidth. They are pinging the network and requesting allocation of resources, clamoring for an individual voice in the inclusive message of OccupyWallStreet.

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

Many of these positions have had organized groups for themselves for years. Each little splinter and fragment; each tiny subnet circulating on its own, exchanging information with other groups yet keeping within the same system parameters. After the pepper-spray and police violence amplified the signal strength and visibility of the OccupyWallStreet network, all kinds of groups are asking for access privileges.

Beware "support" from @moveon, the Democratic Party's online astroturf operation. It's a Trojan Horse.

It's fun watching mainstream Dems maneuver to co-opt #OccupyWallStreet the same way Republicans wrestled the Tea Party from the grass roots.

The tweets above are representative of many. Some are trolls, but many more are sincere in expressing caution and solidarity/unification/inclusion with OccupyWallStreet's objectives, aims and process against outside signals until it is established that the OWS Terms-Of-Service are compatible with these other pre-established networks.

Don't dismiss this; very valuable insight from an ex-Tea Party member about how outside networks can attempt to invade and hijack focus. +4 Stars****

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

The Frequency is 99%

The strongest principle the OccupyWallStreet network has maintained from the beginning is inclusion. The forming of the General Assembly; the participation of electronic supporters and the open nature of its data and information distribution are observable and well-known.

Sure, there's a lot of "go us!" from the youth bloc; after all, this was mostly their idea to start with; the other groups have been hanging around for some time now... yet the message of OccupyWallStreet resonates with grannies, middies, students, laborers, teachers, First Responders, airline pilots, decommissioned Marines... the chords OccupyWallStreet are striking resonate with a large cross-section of America [when the word finally got out]. The frequency is 99%.

I would think the established alternate-networks would understand the value of OccupyWallStreet's BIOS and network signal, which is very strong and has galvanised people everywhere. I have seen no evidence of exclusion; if certain groups, causes or organizations feel under-represented there, then they should add some resources; some representative people go down there and do OccupyWallStreet. No one's stopping you; no one's excluding you; but you could add to OccupyWallStreet's network by pitching in some resources, some people or some services as long as you adhere to OWS' Terms Of Service, processes and authority.

6e * 65 * 74 * 77 * 6f * 72 * 6b

The OccupyWallStreet network is strong; it has learned under harsh evolutionary pressures and is still learning; that is its model. I hope OWS will be able to match protocols with external system resources; a bigger network is always better for robustness and flexibility. I hope they have good internal security, auditing and trust certificates from external networks before they decide if those resources are compatible with OccupyWallStreet's process and operating system. It's a good one; robust and flexible with a rock-solid core. I wouldn't want to see it lose identity in a code rewrite.

Nader, Ron Paul, Kucinich Speak to Occupy Wall Street

*any organizations named or graphically depicted in this essay are symbolic only of the diversity of signal being directed at OWS network and not an indemnification of those organizations or their messages. The position stated in this essay is a generic observation and aimed at no particular group or platform. Like OccupyWallStreet, it is metaphorically inclusive.
